  1. A Wedding To Remember (2:1-11)

  2. JOHN 2:1-2 • On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.

  3. JOHN 2:3-5 • When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."

  4. Matthew 9:10-11 • And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"

  5. Matthew 11:18-19 • For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.' The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds."

  6. Luke 5:33-35 • And they said to him, "The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink." And Jesus said to them, "Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days."

  7. JOHN 2:3-5 • When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."

  8. Piper The gist of this phrase seems to be: “I don’t want you pressing in here. You shouldn’t be coming to me like this. This is not your affair…This is not your place to be calling out my power

  9. Henry Though, as man, he was David's Son and hers; yet, as God, he was David's Lord and hers, and he would have her know it

  10. Mark 3:31-35 • And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, "Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you." And he answered them, "Who are my mother and my brothers?" And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother."

  11. Jesus’ “Hour” • John 7:30:“So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.” • John 8:20:“No one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.” • John 12:27:“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour.” • John 12:23–24: “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified...” • John 17:1: When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you

  12. JOHN 2:6-10 • Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast." So they took it…

  13. JOHN 2:6-10 • …When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now."

  14. Romans 13:13 • Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.

  15. Galatians 5:19-21 • The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God

  16. Ephesians 5:18 • Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit

  17. JOHN 2:1 • This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

  18. What Does John Want Us To See? • Jesus’ PUBLIC Ministry Has Begun • Jesus’ Divine Power • Jesus’ Great Compassion • Jesus’ Abundance of Grace • Jesus’ Mission Previewed

  19. 1 JOHN 1:7 • But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
