  4. Review of the Middle Ages • Time period: 5th century – 15th century • Renaissance will begin in the 14th century and last until the 17th century

  5. Political • Countries are being consolidated and cities grow • Most areas are controlled by Monarchies (England, France) or powerful families (Italy) • Church has political power

  6. Economic • Most people worked on a manor for a lord and harvested the crops • Peasants were taxed heavily • Most people farm; however, trade is growing

  7. Religious • Catholic Church is all powerful and only church in Europe • Often helped control the government/laws • Crusades – Christians vs. Muslims vs. Jews (11th-13th century) • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wh-JGjIZYpI

  8. Social • Feudalism – society is divided based on land/wealth • Lords, Knights, Peasants • Women have no power • Entertainment – revolved around the Church (singing, dinners, etc…)

  10. Intellectual • Arts – again, revolved around the Church/Bible • Education – nobility and clerics tended to be educated. • Majority of people were not

  11. Bloodletting • Medicine was often a risky business. Bloodletting was a popular method of restoring a patient's health. • Early surgery was without anesthesia.

  12. Medical Treatment • Medical treatment was available mainly to the wealthy, and those living in villages rarely had the help of doctors, who practiced mostly in the cities and courts. Remedies were often herbal in nature, but also included ground earthworms, urine, and animal excrement.

  13. Area/Geography • Resources – used trade to get goods from Asia • A little at a time = expensive • Shipping from the Mediterranean
