Leviticus - Overview • Background – Mount Sinai • Timing – Right after Ten Commandments and Golden Calf incident • Audience – Priests, Levites and whole Israel • Purpose – God showing Israel how to live as a holy nation • Main Themes • All are called to His Holiness • Offerings and Sacrifice as means towards holiness • Law as a means to achieve holiness

  4. Holiness • Holiness – Set Apart or separated • Separated from what? • Unholy thoughts • Unholy deeds • Unholy People • Every Area of our lives be devoted to God • Bring the subject of offering before God and inspect it- Is it without Blemish?

  5. What does that mean to me? • What is my call to holiness? • Who is a priest ? Am I a Priest?(1 Peter 2:9) • How do I make a perfect offering? • Sanctify me O, Lord! • Holiness code is perfected by Jesus in the parable of Good Samaritan- “Be merciful as even my father is merciful.”

Offerings and sacrifice • Means of atonement for un-holiness • Symbols of repentance from sins and Obedience to God • Sacrifices are made ‘before the Lord’ • Perfect Offering, spotless and without defect – Where do we see this perfect offering ? • Sacrifices vs. Instant gratification • The perfect offering and the high priest are combined in Jesus

Summary • God Cares about his people, not just spiritually but physically • Since we are in our fallen state, God gives us guidelines to walk in the holiness. • God wants to forgive us our trespasses • God wants us to be Holy as He is Holy • God wants to see each of us to live in his holiness and be offered as a perfect scarifice
