  1. Literacy in the Workplace:Helping Students Become Successful By: Datha Peters, TVI, Life Skills Instructor Jerri Young, TVI Assistive Technology Instructor

Main Goals: • The main goal of this presentation is connecting literacy by arming students with the language of employment and preparing students for their future success. • The main goal of this presentation is to share useful activities that help develop and build on the necessary skills for achieving employment.

  3. On-line Submissions: Usage of Technology • As we all know, more and more technology surrounds what is used when applying for a job. Resumes and applications are now to be filled out or sent in on this website or another. People have to be able to read, write, and use technology to apply for even the simplest jobs. • People have to know how to maneuver around a computer system, be able list what is required and make sure that all is accessible and understandable for their possible employer.

  4. Technological Terminology • One last thing to keep in mind with technology in any workplace situation, know your lingo. If you have a good grasp of the technological vocabulary that is used at the job, the job becomes an easier place to work at. • More matter what type job it is, some type of technology is used there.

  5. Devices • The types of devices that people with difficulties can use in applying for a job include, but are not limited to, • Computer/laptop • Screen Magnifier/Screen Reader • Refreshable Braille Display • Mouse/Keyboard Shortcut Commands • Speech output device

Pitfall of Technology Something to watch and consider is the fact that not all resume options and job applications will come in a format that is accessible to all. • Screen Readers- Screen readers can have issues with some programs that resumes and applications could be listed on. • Update- Stay up-to-date with your computer system, screen magnifier/reader, etc. If your equipment is not kept up-to-date, it can make it more difficult for sites and programs to be accessible. Always remember- Technology is wonderful, but it can breakdown and become inaccessible. Always know where you can go to get your equipment fixed when things breakdown.

  7. Application Skills • Certain skills have to be applied in order to successfully apply for a job. • Organizational Skills- being able to go through the resume or application requirements. • Reading and Writing Skills- knowing what each requirement says and being able to answer clearly and concisely. • Technological Skills- knowing how to get to the resume or application to fill out, knowing how to use spell check if spelling becomes and issue.
