Information technology officers fulfill a number of different functions, though primarily, their duty is to handle and manage networks (internal and external), software issues, and phone systems. Officers in higher management positions also have to oversee other IT professionals and teams assigned to specific issues or certain area within the company. Some information technology officers also manage systems at a regional or district level, especially in bigger companies.

  3. In a direct capacity, IT officers are expected to oversee the actual software and hardware that creates the company's network infrastructure. They deal with setting up servers, server crashes, replacement of old hardware, streamlining the system, and other tasks involved in computer networking. Some IT offers also deal with organization's telephone systems, software management, and internal computer issues. In the real world, information technology officers often have to deal with system crashes or massive data recovery functions.

  4. Those in management positions often have to make decisions on software procurement and migration. IT managers oversee need leadership as well as the skills necessary to delegate tasks and use the expertise and talents of various IT professionals within the organization. Large conglomerates have teams of IT professionals on staff delegated to different locations, and IT offers or managers often have to travel to those locations to check of the projects are properly implemented or to introduce new protocols and systems.

  5. How Much Do It Officer Jobs Pay? Technology professionals are in demand now more than ever, so it's not surprising that information technology officers are paid well, too. According to recent reports by Dice.com, technology officers earned an average salary of $89,450 annually - a 2% increase from the 2013 figures. About 61% of these IT professionals earned more in 2014 because of merit raises, while 25% did so by moving to another employer. A solid 37% of tech officers in the survey received bonuses in 2014 - slightly more than the 34% figure in 2013.

The trend is true not only for the US but also the UK. A new report by e-skills UK predicts that jobs in the information technology and telecoms sector will grow twice as quickly from now until 2020, compared to the UK average.
