  1. Converting from English to Metric Units • Use conversion factors that are exact by definition 1 inch = 2.54 cm 1 ounce = 28.35 g 1 quart = 0.946L or 946 mL

  2. Metric to English Unit Comparison • 1 meter = 39.37 inches • 1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds • 1L = 1.0567 quarts See Your Appendix For More Unit Equations

  3. Bookshelf is 28.0” and need to know it’s length in cm We know that 1 inch = 2.54 cm SO: Cross multiply and solve for X (28.0) x (2.54) = (X) x (1) 71.12 = X

  4. Doing Problems • Read problem completely • Determine the measured qty. in the problem and the units • Determine units being requested • Determine conversion factor that will allow you to change to the new unit

  5. Box of cookies contains 90 cookies. How many dozen cookies is this? • Measured qty is 90. • Need to know how many dozen • We know that 1 doz. = 12 cookies 90 cookies = 12 cookies X dozen 1 dozen = 7.5 doz.

  6. Set up a proportion: Use this type of equivalence to change from one unit to another unit without changing the actual quantity. How many eggs are in 3.5 dozen? X = 12 eggs 3.5 dozen 1 dozen Cross multiply 12 eggs X 3.5 dozen = X (1 dozen) Divide by 1 dozen to solve for X X = 42 eggs

  7. Another example 26 ounces = ____________ grams 1 ounce = 28.35 grams SO: 26 ounces = 1 ounce X grams 28.35 grams

  8. 36 inches = how many cm? • 1 inch = 2.54 cm • Do conversion: 36 in = 1 inch X cm 2.54 cm X = 91.44 cm

  9. Another example 336 mL = ____________ quarts 1 quart = 946 mL SO: X quarts = 1 quart 336 mL 946 mL
