  1. 5 Behavioural Strategies That Can Help Special Child’s Development Special needs children require additional attention and effort for development. They have a hard time communicating and following social norms. They find into difficult to integrate into a social setting. Therapists adopt the following behavioural strategies to help with special child development. Parents can apply these simple strategies at home to facilitate the holistic development of the child. Tell the child what happens next Here is a tip that professionals in autism treatment centres across the country follow to help special needs children. They inform the children what comes next; for example, if it is puzzle-solving time now, they tell the children what activity follows. This will reduce the irritability of the child and they will be more cooperative in transitioning from one activity to activity. Acknowledge the child’s compliance Special needs children find it difficult to comprehend instructions. Acknowledging the child when they comply with instruction goes a long way towards special child development, as it encourages the kid to keep obeying. Give the child choices Experts at autism treatment centres have observed that children display the best results when they are given choices. It gives them a sense of control over what they do, and this helps them execute the tasks they choose much better than when they are told to do something. Remember to use visual aids to help the child make this choice, especially where the child is non-verbal. Help the child transition Special needs children have a hard time comprehending a flurry of activities. However, it is important to schedule different activities throughout the day for complete development. This could include spending different times of the day with different experts, and the child could be overwhelmed by the transition. Let the child take an object from the previous activity to the next one. The sense of familiarity will ease the child’s anxiety and focus on the new activity. Problematic behaviour should be redirected, not reprimanded It is very important for special child development that the child not only understand what to do but also what not to do. The best strategy to apply when problematic behaviour is exhibited by the child is redirection. For instance, if the child is running instead of walking, remind the child that they should walk and show them how to. This will shift the focus of the child and will encourage compliance.
