  2. Early Life • Born in Brouage, France in the year 1567 • Entered the army under King Henry IV • Son of a sea captain • He practiced the Roman Catholic religion

  3. Voyages • 1603- first voyage to New France • 1604- established colony at mouth of St. Croix River • 1605- moved across the Bay of Bundy • Made a total of 21 voyages

  4. Later Life • When Champlain returned to France he faced lawsuits and wasn’t able to return to Quebec • Spent time writing stories about his voyages with maps and illustrations • Adopted three daughters after leaving Quebec • Died in the year 1635

  5. Interesting facts • Married Helene Boulle in 1610 when she was 12, and he 43 • Two of his daughters were kidnapped by England • One daughter returned to her native land • Lake Champlain is named after his discovery
