UWSC grants program for emergencies and emerging needs 92 programs that meet basic needs at 32 partner agencies UWSC community impact areas (areas of unmet need in Story County) • Prevention strategies • Outreach/advocacy services • Access to building blocks for academic success • Basic/emergency needs met • Movement toward self-sufficiency • Affordable/accessible essential services for healthy lives

  9. UWSC & Partners Focus on Education • Grade Level Reading campaign • Iowa Reading Corps • Trained AmeriCorps members tutor students • Partnering schools: Ballard East, Nevada Central & Sawyer

UWSC & Nevada Elementary Partnership • Summer programming is important to keep kids on track • Low income students lose on average 2 months or more in reading • By 5th grade they can be 3 grade equivalents behind • Summer is also harder for families to keep from going hungry • Knowing this, what can UWSC do to help?

UWSC Fills Gaps During Summer • Expand the 2013 Summer Food Program with partners in Nevada Increase from 16 to 28 days • Pilot a second site in Ames • Both sites will include Academic, Food Program and Enrichment • Organized by two AmeriCorps VISTA members hosted by UWSC • Supplemented with two more AmeriCorps VISTAs through VCSC • Funded by UWSC Endowment
