  1. Studies in 1 Corinthians (39) Varieties of Gifts, but the Same Spirit 1 Corinthians 12:4-11

  2. The Source of these gifts • All three persons of the Godhead are mentioned – “same Spirit…same Lord…same God.” (4,5,6) • The Godhead – Gen. 1:1-2, Jn. 1:1-3; Matt. 3:16-17, 28:19, John 14:16-17Eph. 4:4-6, Heb. 2:3-4

  3. The Source of these gifts • Varieties of gifts (4) – WHAT is received • Varieties of ministries (5) Serving others. Different circumstances Cf. Matt. 4:3-4, 2 Cor. 12:7-10 • Variety of effects (6) – the RESULT

  4. The Source of these gifts • The SAME Spirit administers these gifts (4-6) There is a unity in efforts of the Godhead with various gifts that accomplished a single purpose – Magnifying God and His church • NO room for competition. • Vs. 11 – distributed as He wills

  5. VARIOUS Gifts Given (7-10) • EACH gift furthered the cause of the gospel. • Inspiration not yet completed – thus needed. • NOTE: Not total agreement on what each gift means, but united purpose is clear.

  6. VARIOUS Gifts Given (7-10) • The Word of wisdom(8) – power to reveal principles of thought and behavior OR complete understanding of the whole gospel (cf. 1 Cor. 15:1-6) • Knowledge (8) Either facts of the gospel or special knowledge dealing with special subjects, (cf. Eph. 3:3-6)

  7. VARIOUS Gifts Given (7-10) • Faith (9) – Not “saving faith” but faith to perform miracles (cf. Matt. 17:20, 1 Cor. 13:2) • Healings (9) Ability to cure illnesses and diseases

  8. VARIOUS Gifts Given (7-10) • Miracles (10) – More broad than healings (cf. Ac. 13:8-12, 5:1-11, 20:9-10, 9:36-42, etc.) • Prophecy (10) A messenger of God

  9. VARIOUS Gifts Given (7-10) • Discerning spirits (10) – ability to identify false teachers, etc. (cf. 1 John 4:1)

  10. VARIOUS Gifts Given (7-10) • Kinds of tongues (10) – ability to speak in a foreign language without training • Interpretation of tongues (10) Ability to interpret foreign languages (cf. Jn. 1:42, Heb. 7:2)

  11. Distributed as He wills (11) • There is ONE Spirit (Eph. 4:4) • Together they accomplish His purpose • Man had no choice in what he received

  12. Distributed as He wills (11) • The Corinthians had a problem with this – competitive and arrogant. • The gifts NEVER used for selfish purposes. • TODAY, while our gifts are different, the principles apply!

  13. Are you using the abilities god has given you?
