  1. Germany, Flanders, and Spain During the Renaissance Main Idea- The Renaissance spread to all parts of Europe and influenced trade and the arts.

  2. Germany and Flanders Religious scholars learned Greek and Hebrew in order to understand the earliest versions of the bible. Erasmus- Translated the bible into Latin Influenced by Italian merchants, German merchants began to appreciate wealth, beauty, and personal improvement. Marked the beginning of the “middle class”

  3. The Printing Press Invented by Joannes Gutenberg Machine that printed books As a result- 1. books were printed rapidly 2. many people where learning to read and think for themselves 3. New ideas spread quickly

Spain Renaissance took hold in late 1400s Supported by Cardinal Jimenez Strong believer in learning King Phillip II distrusted this new interest in learning and punished many scholars with charges of heresy Despite the lack of support the arts flourished in cities like Toledo (painting, writing, and theater)
