  1. SBES Alliances in the Context of AGEP Roosevelt Johnson, Ph.D. Program Director, AGEP National Science Foundation April 27, 2006

  2. Overview • Challenges • Contextual Framework • Strategic Guidance

  3. Challenges • Making the SBES community more diverse to make scholars and scholarship more diverse. • Managing a short-term project to achieve long-term results. • Moving from model-project status to mainstream funding. • Always thinking “Comprehensive, Holistic, Coordinated and Evaluated.”

  4. Contextual Framework • AGEP models for change are focused on graduate student affairs, including: • Recruitment and talent spotting strategies • Admissions and selection processes • Financial aid (new GS enrollment & retention) • Student support programs (early course-taking years) • Advising, mentoring, and retention • Workforce preparation (leadership; professoriate) • Ph.D. Career counseling and placement

  5. Contextual Framework, cont. • Graduate school decision makers include: • Graduate School and Academic Deans, Provosts, and other administrators • Departmental Chairs • Departmental Admissions and Selection Committees • Departmental Graduate Program Directors and Advisors • Faculty

  6. Strategic Guidance • Leverage the infrastructure built through AGEP… maximize synergy and institutionalization. • Avoid the temptation to develop activities that are disconnected from strategic plans… always think context. • Effectively utilize your MS programs as pipelines to the Ph.D. • Take full advantage of your opportunity to solidify your positions as leaders in the diversification of SBES.

  7. Closing Thought You are already the Nation’s top producers of minority Ph.D.s in SBES. You could easily rest on your laurels… yet, you have demonstrated a level of commitment, vision, and leadership that serves as a model for other disciplines and universities. NSF must not be satisfied with applauding you… we must find ways of supporting you. You, in turn, must continue to raise the bar for the rest of the academy. -R.Johnson, 2006
