  3. How FRAC Operates • Chair & Secretary elected yearly • Meet as needed (typically 2 to 3 times per year) • Use rubrics for scoring research awards • Serve as advisory committee

  5. FRAC Programs • Compensated Leave • Proposals Due October of each year • Faculty Development Endowment Funds • Proposals Due October and February of each year • Faculty Research Award • Proposals Due February of each year

Compensated Leave The purpose of the compensated leave program is to provide opportunities for eligible faculty members to engage in professional activities that enhance their tenure at Arkansas State University while receiving regular salary. Option 1: After six academic years, if no leave has been used, a full academic year may be granted at half salary. One semester of leave at full salary may be substituted. Option 2: After three-years of service to Arkansas State University, persons who have been accepted in an accredited graduate program compatible with the mission of the department or academic area may be granted an academic year's leave of absence for the purpose of graduate study. Compensation shall be at the rate of 10 percent for each year of service to Arkansas State University, not to exceed 50 percent of the appointment salary. Option 3: Leave may be granted to retrain tenured faculty members employed in programs that are being reduced or phased out. Compensation shall be calculated at the rate of 10 percent for each year of service to Arkansas State University, up to a maximum of 50 percent of appointment salary.

  8. Faculty Development Endowment Funds • Eleanor Lane: international travel up to $1000 • Nathan Deutsch: domestic travel and other activities up to $500 • Contingent upon health of stock market • Applicant has not received an award from the fund for 3 years • Proposal Components • Scope and significance • Benefits to ASU and contributions to field • Budget justification • Plan to disseminate benefits and contributions Application materials are located on the FRAC page of the ORTT website: http://www.astate.edu/a/ortt/research-development/faculty-opportunities/faculty-research-awards-committee/index.dot

  9. Faculty Research Award Special consideration for: • First time applicants • Non-tenured applicants • An applicant who has not received this award for 10 years

Faculty Research Award • $40,000 provided from E&G • Spring competition for following fiscal year award (i.e. February 2014 competition - funds must be spent during FY15 (July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015)) • Encouraged to include students in proposal • Consult with your college representative • Intended as seed money for larger grants • Used to expand scholarly activity • Only one proposal per PI

  11. Faculty Research Award: Proposal Format • Scope (what), significance (why), measurable objective (how) • Review of related work by PI and others • Methodology/Plan of work • Schedule of activities from initiation to completion • Evaluation plan • Dissemination/showcase of results

  13. Guaranteed Rejection • Handwritten • After 4:30 PM on the due date • Proposal exceeds page requirements for any component • Outdated forms • Missed signatures
