Cardiac Muscle

  • Involuntary and striated muscle

  • Cardiocyte = Muscle Cell of the Heart

  • Short, thick, branched cells

  • Each cell has only 1 nucleus

  • ~10-20μm in diameter

  • ~50-100μm in length

  • Each Cell joined by Intercalated Disks.

  • No Neuromuscular Junctions

  • Proteins of Cardiac Muscle are similar to Skeletal Muscle

  • Mechanism of Contraction similar to Skeletal Muscle

  • Fatigue Resistant

  • No Striations or Sarcomeres

  • No Neuromuscular Junctions

  • No Motor Nerves

  • Calmodulin shuttles Calcium into the Cell.

  • Mechanism of Contraction differs from Skeletal and Cardiac Muscle.

  • Interaction of Myosin with Actin same as in Skeletal and Cardiac Muscle.

  • Also found lining the stomach, bladder, and uterus.
