  4. Welcome to Phones 4 All • Today I am going to talk to you about safe working practices when using ICT within the business environment. We will look at • protecting health • protecting physical safety • protecting files from loss • protecting files from unauthorised access

  5. How to protect health • Using ICT can have an impact on your health in many ways. • Your eyesight can suffer from using VDUs. • You can get backache from sitting incorrectly.

  6. To protect your health • Make sure you are sitting correctly. • Support your back. • Adjust your chair. • Rest your feet on the floor. • Place your screen at eye level. • Watch this video

Eyesight • There is no legal limit. • However, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) suggests its better to take shorter breaks more often than longer breaks less often. • There is no study to show a link between VDU use and damage to eyesight but you may feel your eyes are getting tired. • You have a right to a free eyesight test if you use a VDU a lot during work hours. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/HealthAndSafetyAtWork/DG_10026668

  8. Physical safety dangers • There is a potential for danger within a business environment: • Slips and trips • Lifting and carrying

  9. Protect yourself • Cover all loose wires. • Follow guidance for manual lifting and carrying.

  10. Danger: Files can be lost • You can lose important files if you do not regularly save work and back up. • Viruses can cause damage to your computer. • You can lose your whole computer if you spill a drink over it!

  11. Solutions • Always back up to the computer, an external drive and even to an online based storage area. • Never leave drinks near your computer. • Run an anti-virus programme regularly.

  13. Password protect • Use password protection on important files. • Other users can access as read only documents. • Password protect your USB sticks and other external storage devices.

  14. Be safe • Using these solutions you will be able to overcome the potential dangers of working with ICT. • Be safe. • Ask if anything is unclear.
