  2. Types of High Tension Cable If you did not already know this, then you have come to the right place! You may have heard the term high tension cable in passing or otherwise at various points in your life. Maybe you never wondered about a high tension cable until now. Either way, we are here to help you learn something new.

  3. Types of High Tension Cable Overhead Power Lines • The overhead power cables are high tension cables because they transmit electric power at really high voltages to prevent loss of energy that happens in the case of long distance transmission. How this works is simple. If you look at the mathematical equation of electric power, you will see that electric power is simply the result of multiplying the value of voltage and the value of electric current, calculated in their international standard units. (Yes, in Physics all these terms have different meanings!) This means that if the voltage is increased, to maintain the electric power, the value of current goes down and this reduces the loss of energy through excessive heating and eddy currents. Nowadays, in many cases, aluminium wires are used in place of copper wires in such high tension cables. The overhead power lines do not have an insulating sheath and the air works as the insulation here. • This is mainly since these cables do not encounter living beings. This makes these lines the most cost effective means of transporting electric power over long distances.

  4. Types of High Tension Cable Underground Cables • Electric power is also transmitted through underground cables that pass through land, as well as water in seas or oceans. These cables are very well equipped with an insulating sheath that prevents the corrosion of the cable within because of the surrounding matter. In view of the kind of insulation used in these high-tension cables, they are divided into solid and non solid high tension cables.

  5. Types of High Tension Cable Solid cables • Upto the 1980s, it was common in countries like Australia to use paper lead insulation. This was the kind of cable that had the least amount of current carrying capacity. Later, these paper-lead insulations were switched to plastic - a polymer called XLPE which is a cross linked polymer of polyethylene. These cables are pretty much durable in cases where there is water as the surrounding medium. • Non-solid cables • As far as non-solid insulation goes - there’s one reasonably popular cable type where the insulation used is liquid oil. The cable appears to be some sort of a controlled water pipeline more than an electric high tension cable. There’s also another reasonably popular cable where the insulation is a gas - Nitrogen. However, these two cables seem to have had a history of failure as well.

  6. Types of High Tension Cable With all the different variety that a high tension cable can come in, it is not surprising that it may seem confusing to a layman. However, it is important to proper research before delving into what cables to buy so that you know what suits your needs the best. Text
