Questions to ask yourself • Does the base word have a short vowel sound? • Does the base word have 1 syllable? • Does the base word have 1 vowel? • Does the base word end with 1 consonant? • If you answered yes to all 4 questions, then the final consonant should be doubled before you add the “er” to the end.

  3. Other generalizations • If you answer “no” to any of the previous four questions… • Look at the base word, if it has a long vowel sound then you need to drop the “e” at the end of the word before adding “er”.

  4. Other generalizations cont. • If the base word has a short vowel sound then you simply add “er” to the ending with out changing the spelling of the root word.
