  2. Japan Pre-WWII • Japan conquered Korea in 1910 • Japan conquered Manchuria in 1931 after the 1st Sino-Japanese War • Japan started the 2nd Sino-Japanese War in 1937 • Japan signed a neutrality agreement with the USSR on April 1941

War in the Asia-Pacific • Japan launched simultaneous attacks on Pearl Harbour, the Philippines, British Malaya and Burma, French Indochina and the Dutch East Indies in December, 1941 • The US declared war on Japan • The US adopted “island hopping” tactics to fight Japan • The British fought with the Japanese in Burma and India • American President Harry Truman ordered the use of the atomic bomb on Japan in 1945 • On 6 August 1945, “Fat Man” was dropped on Hiroshima. “Little Boy” was dropped on Nagasaki 3 days later

Reasons for Japan’s Attacks • Japan wanted the Asia-Pacific Region to be part of it’s empire for 3 reasons: • for it’s growing population • to free Asia from Western Control • Japan needed resources • Japan felt the US was trying to stop them from expanding it’s empire for a number of reasons: • The Washington Naval Conference made Japan’s Navy very small • The US launched a trade embargo on Japan because they refused to leave China • The US had many colonies in the Asia-Pacific • The US reinforced their military bases in Pearl Harbour as well as the Philippines after Japan attacked China

  5. Combat in the Pacific • US troops arrived on each island on LVTs which were carried by warships and aircraft carriers • The Japanese were infamous for their brutal traps and their suicidal Banzai Charges • Air support was very important • Flamethrowers were used frequently by the US • The Jungle terrain was sometimes even more dangerous than the enemy

  6. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are the first and only known use of Nuclear Weapons outside of testing It’s effects are devastating
