  2. A. The Viking Invasion of Europe • Main Idea • The Viking invasion in the ninth through the eleventh centuries resulted in the settlement of Normandy and the Norman conquest of England

  3. A. The Viking Invasion of Europe • The Crisis of Power in England • This was the first settlement in the region that would be called Normandy. • As the Norman rulers became stronger they set out to expand their power. • During his reign Edward had established close ties with the Normans.

The Viking Invasion of Europe • The Norman Conquest • An unhappy William of Normandy invaded England in October 1066. • William marched next to London where the undefended nobles were ready to submit to his rules • The victory of William's army over the English is known as the Norman Conquest.

  5. B.Feudalism • Main Idea • Feudalism benefited both lords and peasant while technology improve their lives

B.Feudalism • Land Grant and Service • In a feudal society a king might grant a large parcel of land called a manor to a lord or knight. • Both the lord and his vassal had an obligation to one a another. • In this case a vassal often had one liege lord, or primary lord, to whom he owed first service.

  7. B.Feudalism • Knighthood • In the early middle ages the lord of a manor was by definition a noble and a knight • He also had to feed, clothe, and provide horses for the servants who traveled with to war • Knight were supposed to be brave and honest.

  8. B.Feudalism • Importance of castles • Kings and lords built great castles with high strong walls to protect themselves and their families. • There were also areas where horses and weapon were kept. • Castles were often located in key places that were important to trade or travel

  9. B.Feudalism • Women in the middle ages • During the middle ages the legal status for all women was below that of men • The daily life of women depended in large part of their social status. • Ladies of the manor were usually responsible for running the household

  10. C.The Economics OF Feudalism • Main Idea • Feudal societies brought safety to Europe and a new class of nobility.

C.The Economic of Feudalism • Peasants • Some peasants were free to move from place to place as they whished but most were serfs. • Serfs were peasants who were legally bound to the land of the manor where they worked. • Serfs paid rent usually In the form of food produced and agreed to work three day a week in the lords fields.

The Economic of Feudalism • Technology Brings Improvement in farming • By the eleventh century life in Europe had improved somewhat. • People generally had plenty of food and were not being killed in battle. • The lords had to extend new privileges or remove some of the heavier burden from their peasant worker
