2. FOLKTALE Walk The Crane's The shore of a blue sea was home to a large number of tiny sea creatures like jelly fsh, snails, star fshes, eels and shrimps. There also lived a family of crabs among them. The crabs played in the sand all day long and ate tiny sea creatures. One day, the mother crab noticed a beautiful crane walking straight with its long and thin legs. “How pretty it looks, walking so gracefully on the sand!” thought the crab to herself. Suddenly, she saw her son crawling sluggishly towards her. The mother crab got irritated and thought, “The crane is so beautiful and walks so gracefully, and look at my son—he is so clumsy and sloppy.” The mother crab went to her son and said, “Why do you walk in such an awkward fashion? Can’t you walk straight and gracefully? Now lift all your ten legs and walk properly.” “Mother, I have never learnt to walk straight. How can I walk gracefully?” asked the crab. “If you try sincerely, you can do anything. Now get up and start walking.” said the mother crab au- thoritatively. The poor crab tried really hard to stand straight, but failed every time. Tired and exhausted he said, “Mother, will you show me once to walk straight? Maybe I can learn it from you.” The mother crab tried and tried repeatedly, but could never manage to even stand straight, so walking was simply out of question. “I guess, nature has gifted diferent creatures with their unique qualities, and we are best this way,” said the mother crab and hugged her son.

But when a bird perches on an electric wire, electricity passes through the wire but not through the bird and the bird does not get an electric shock. We get our electricity from a power station. Electricity passes along wires from the power stations to ofces, factories and homes. The force that pushes electricity through the wires is called volt- age. Voltage is very high when electricity leaves the power station. To make electricity safe for people to use, transformers and substations are setup to lower the voltage. In some cities, under- ground cables carry electricity, thus avoiding overhead wires. Electricity fows at two diferent voltages. If a bird perches on two wires, of if its body touches an electric pole while perched on the wire, then it makes a path for electricity to fow between two diferent voltages. When electricity passes through something, heat is produces. When a strong electric current fows through a bird, it produces enough heat to cause a bad burn. The shock from the current makes the animals heart stop. Even low-voltage electricity can kill animals and people. Most electric power stations burn fossil fuels to drive generators, which create and electromotive force, or voltage, that pushes an electric current through wires. The wires distribute the electric current to homes, ofces and factories. Since electric currents will fow between voltage diferenc- es, people or animals forming a bridge between an electric wire and another medium will become part of an electric circuit and electricity will fow through them.

6. stories from history Jahangir Nuruddin Salim Jahangir was the son of Akbar and his beloved wife Jodha. He had two brothers, Murad and Daniyal. Jahangir was extremely popular in his father’s court because of his military skills and intelligence. His first triumph came at the age of 12, when he led a regiment of soldiers into Kabul emerging victorious. By the time Jahangir turned 16, he was made a ‘Mansubdar,’ a high military post, commanding 12,000 men. Jahangir, who was married by this time and had children also, did not like the idea of his father favouring his grandchild Khurram. He felt that Akbar would favour Khurram over his eldest child Khusrau, who was the rightful heir. After a number of misunderstandings with his father, Jahangir marched to Alla- habad, where he proclaimed himself to be king. 5

7. Jahangir, after leading an irresponsible life, now ruled wisely. He, like his father, expanded his kingdom and crushed those who rebelled against the Mughal rule. He is also known to have released several prisoners of war and was a great patron of the arts and learning. One of his greatest achievements in the field of justice was the Golden Chain of Justice. Sixty bells, were connected to each other with a chain outside the castle in Agra. Anyone with a grievance could pull the chain and get a chance to meet the Emperor in person. Like his father, Jahangir was very tolerant towards other religions, more so be- cause his own mother was a Hindu Rajput princess. Jahangir was married to Mehrunnisa, the wife of a slain rebel officer. He was so captivated by her beauty that he named her Nur Jahan (Light of the World). Nur Jahan played a big role in important matters of the State and her stepson Khur- ram, the future King, was always in conflict with her. The good times did not last long. Mahabat Khan attacked Jahangir’s army and captured him. He however managed to escape thanks to Nur Jahan’s plan. This however took a toll on his health, which had already deteriorated from excessive drinking. Jahangir traveled to Kashmir where he could take time off to recover. Here he found the peace he desired. He built the magnificent Shalimar Bagh for his wife on the Dal Lake. It had sprawling gardens and a number of terraces liked by a water channel. Three lovely pavilions were built with black marble pillars and big halls.

8. Jahangir breathed his last in 1627. His son Khurram (Shah Jahan) marched to Agra and took over the reigns of the kingdom, im- prisoning his stepmother, Nur Jahan in a beautiful mansion. Those Who Made a Difference Laishram Bombayla Devi Laishram Bombayla Devi is an Indian archer from the state of Manipur. She represented India at the 2008 Beijing Olympics for the Individual Recurve women's event. This is an archery event using a bow whose tips are bent away from the archer. It ofers more resistance and sta- bility than other bow shapes. Laishram was born on 22nd February 1985 in Imphal, Manipur. Her family is steeped in sports. Her mother is also an archer and teaches archery. Her mother encouraged her a great deal in her sport. Bombayla Devi’s father was Manipur state’s handball coach. In order to get ahead in her sport Laishram joined the Sports Authority of India where she trained to the level she now competes at. Laishram has won multiple medals in her event and although she was unable to deliver at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. She was awarded the gold medal with the Indian Team at 2010 Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi. She has won a medal at every Archery World Cup from 2011 till 2016. She was also honoured with the Arjuna Award and Padma Shri from the Government of India.
