Main travelers were diplomats, business people, and scholars. Mainly for career, education, culture, literary, health, scientific, business, and economic reasons. What is the modern equivalent?

  2. Backpacking! It’s a rite of passage! Also known as a “gap year” (Europe) or “walkabout” (Australia).
