2. Civil War and Conflict • Africa is the most politically unstable continent in the world • Limited resources, ethnic differences, and weak governments cause conflict • Civil War (battles among citizens within a country) often occurs

4. Kenya • 1963 Kenya was declared independent from England • Now it is a republic with a president • Until 1991 it only had one political party • 1992 they held elections for President with more than one candidate running for office

5. Presidents serve a 5 year term with a two term limit he also appoints a cabinet of ministers and a VP • Their legislature is called the Bunge and the President must approve laws they create • Citizens 18 and older can vote

7. South Africa • South Africa is made up of 9 provinces • Their constitution was ratified in 1996 • Power is split between the executive and legislative branches

9. Legislature has two houses • President has a 5 years term and appoints a deputy President and cabinet • Citizens over 18 can vote

10. Sudan • Has a two political party system A government made up of two parties - the National Congress Party (NCP) and Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) – in 2005. • Mainly governed by Islamic law • All power is invested in the President even though they have 3 branches of government

Anybody of the age of 17 can vote. • Many feel that elections are corrupt and often rigged by the ruling party • In the last major election the NCP party won an overwhelming 80% of the vote even though many opposed their rule. The outcome of the election made many feel that they were right in believing that the government is corrupt
