Surprise Attack on Pearl Harbor • Japan & America suffer strained relationship due to Japanese aggression • U.S. aided Chinese resistance • U.S. cut off oil supply to Japan • America aware an attack might come • December 7th 1941– Attack on Pearl Harbor • Sunk or damaged 18 ships • 2,400 Americans killed • 1,000 wounded

  3. Tide of Japanese Victories • Japan seizes Guam & Wake Island • January 1942- Japan takes Philippines • Seize Hong Kong, Malaya , Singapore, Indonesia & Burma by March 1942 • Japan conquers 1 million square miles and 150 million people

  4. Allies Turn the Tide • Americans make a statement with the Doolittle raids • Battle of Coral Sea – Allies stop Japan’s expansion for 1st time

  5. Battle of Midway • Japan assembles largest naval force ever • U.S. outnumbered 4 ships to 1 • U.S. destroys 322 Japanese planes, 4 aircraft carriers & 1 support ship • Turned war in favor of U.S. & Allies

  6. Allies Go on the Offensive • Allies strategy – “Island Hopping” • Pass over well fortified islands for ones closer to Japanese mainland • August 7th 1942- 19,000 Marines with Australian support land on Guadalcanal • Battle of Guadalcanal ends February 1943 • Allied victory First Division Marines storm ashore across Guadalcanal's beaches
