  2. Why is course selection important? • What you choose now will effect future course/program selections • You need to be aware of prerequisites of future courses and program requirements • Research admission requirements of post-secondary institutions you may want to attend

Graduation Requirements • 18 credits required • Maximum 7 credits from grade 10 level • Minimum 5 credits from grade 12 level • 3 English 10, 11, 12 • 2 Math 10, 11, 12 (graduating class of 2020 need grade 12 Math) • 2 Science Sci 10, one other Science • 1 Can His Studies (Mik 11, ACS 11, Can His 11) • 1 Global Studies 12 • 1 Phys Ed • 1 Fine Arts • 2 Science, Math or Tech • 4 Electives (Before graduating class of 2020 needs 5 electives)

  4. Extended Math 11 • Extended Mathematics 11 • (academic, 2 credits) • Prerequisite: Successful completion of Mathematics 10. • Extended Mathematics 11 is a 220-hour course that is scheduled over the duration of the school year, September to June. Students who successfully complete this course will receive one grade 11 academic mathematics credit and one grade 11 technology credit. • Extended Mathematics 11 is an academic high school mathematics course. Students who select Extended Mathematics 11 will complete the curriculum outcomes for the semestered Mathematics 11 course and additional concepts in Statistics and Data Analytics. They will have extra time to explore concepts using a variety of learning experiences and use technology to enhance their learning. • The typical pathway for students who successfully complete Extended Mathematics 11 will be to take Mathematics 12. Alternatively, students who successfully complete Extended Mathematics 11 may choose to select either Mathematics at Work 12 or Mathematics Essentials 12. While not the typical pathway, Extended Mathematics 11 can also be used as a pre-requisite for Pre-calculus 11.These courses are to be taken consecutively, not concurrently.* • Students in Extended Mathematics 11 will explore the following topics: linear programming, • applications of rates, scale diagrams and factors, inductive and deductive reasoning, an introduction to proof, cosine law, sine law, spatial reasoning, statistics, systems of linear inequalities, and quadratic functions, inference making from statistical summaries, analyzing and presenting data and how to extract meaning from data. • *Note: Students who complete Extended Mathematics 11 and then decide to take Pre-calculus 11 followed by Pre-calculus 12 should contact their guidance counselor for scheduling options.

Math Course Choices • Students require three Math Credits to graduate (starting grads 2020) • Check post secondary program requirements • Talk to your Math teacher Degrees is Science, Engineering, Computer Science all require Pre Cal 12 with usually a mark of 70-75% Degrees in Commerce/Business, Nursing, Kinesiology all require at least a Math 12 academic with usually a mark of least a 70% (some programs are very competitive). Many Commerce courses outside of Nova Scotia require Pre Cal 12. If you need Pre Cal 12 you will have to register for Math 11 and Pre Cal 11in your grade 11 year If you need a Math 12 academic credit for your program of choice you must have completed the minimal prerequisite Math 10 academic and Math 11 academic • If you are grade 10 this year you must select a grade 11 Math course for next year

French Immersion • Minimum of 9 credits in French Immersion to graduate (we only offer 10 so you can only opt out of 1) • At least 2 FI credits a year • Francais 10, 11, and 12 are compulsory • Grade 10: FRA10 F, SCI10F, Art Dramatique 10F • Grade 11: FRA11F, HDC11F,BIO11F, Mode de Vie Actif 11F • Grade 12: FRA12F, or HPG12F,BIO12F,

  7. CO Op 11 and 12 • Students interested in taking Cooperative Education 11 or 12 are to sign up for the course on powerschool as a subject not as an alternate. The courses are listed as COOPAC11 or COOPAC12 Applications and interviews for CO OP will take place after course selection

  8. O2 students The O2 teacher will assist O2 students with course selection O2 students can do the paperwork but not input courses into Powerschool yet

  9. Skilled Trades • Only students in the Skilled Trades program can choose skilled trades courses on powerschool during course selection • Skilled trades courses are: Construction Trades 11 (CTR11) Transportation Trades 11 (TTR11) Skilled Trades COOP 12 (ST1 COOP 12)

  10. Course Load • Grade 11s take a minimum of 7 courses (required to take 8 if unsuccessful in one or more courses in grade 10 year) • Grade 12s take a minimum of 6 courses (may be required to take an additional course for every unsuccessful course in grade 11, up to a total of 8 courses.) • Students may take 8 courses all three years • May not be able to repeat failed courses in 2ndsem so plan ahead

  11. 1. The admission requirement for certificate and diploma programs is usually a high school completion diploma. 2. Individual programs may have other admission criteria, such as specific high school subjects, or the submission of an entrance portfolio. 3. Please check the program descriptions for detailed admission requirements. 4. Applications are accepted first come first serve so apply early. Link to NSCC Admission requirements

  12. (Other Universities may have different requirements) For general admission to programs, students require grade 12 level academic English (English 12) generally with a mark of at least a 70% and four additional academic courses Dalhousie University admission requirements Mount Saint Vincent University admission requirements Saint Mary’s University admission requirements Check the program admission requirements at the specific university of interest

  13. Course selection is now open • Go to the front page of the Guidance site • Follow the steps on the link • Use the handouts provided • You need your powerschool log in to register for courses

  14. Virtual Course Selection You have just completed Step 1 Guidance appointments are available but you must have attempted to complete steps 1-4 before booking an appointment bring your paperwork to your appointment • If students have not entered their course selections by the deadline then course selections will be done by Guidance
