  1. John 2:23-24 23Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the miraculous signs he was doing and believed in his name. 24But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men.

  2. Three Things 3 things we rarely heard about in the Church of Christ 1. Grace 2. Holy Spirit / Holy Ghost 3. Book of Revelations

  3. Forgotten God “With the entertainment model of church so prevalent today, churches have become filled with self-focused consumers instead of Spirit-filled believers.” Francis Chan

  4. Holy Spirit • What the Spirit is • What role He plays in our lives • How we will respond to Him

  5. WHAT THE SPIRIT IS Genesis 1:26-27 26) Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."   27) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

  6. WHAT THE SPIRIT IS • The Spirit is eternal Hebrews 9:14 • The Spirit is omnipresent Psalms 139:7-10 • The Spirit is omniscient 1 Corinthians 2:10-11 • The Spirit is omnipotent Luke 1:35-37 • The Spirit is Holy Romans 1:4

  7. WHAT THE SPIRIT IS 1 Corinthians 2 1) When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2) For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3) I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. 4) My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, 5) so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power.

  8. WHAT THE SPIRIT IS 1 Corinthians 2 9) However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him" 10) but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11) For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

  9. WHAT THE SPIRIT IS 1 Corinthians 2 12) We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13) This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. 14) The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them…

  10. WHAT ROLE DOES THE SPIRIT PLAY IN OUR LIVES TODAY John 14:25-26  25) "All this I have spoken while still with you. 26) But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

  11. WHAT ROLE DOES THE SPIRIT PLAY IN OUR LIVES TODAY “If I were Satan and my ultimate goal was to thwart God’s kingdom and purposes, one of my main strategies would be to get churchgoers to ignore the Holy Spirit.” Francis Chan

  12. WHAT ROLE DOES THE SPIRIT PLAY IN OUR LIVES TODAY 1 Thessalonians 5:19… 19) “Do not quench the Spirit.”

  13. WHAT ROLE DOES THE SPIRIT PLAY IN OUR LIVES TODAY John 16:13  13) But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

  14. WHAT ROLE DOES THE SPIRIT PLAY IN OUR LIVES TODAY John 3:19-21 19) This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20) Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21) But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

  15. WHAT ROLE DOES THE SPIRIT PLAY IN OUR LIVES TODAY John 19:38-40   38) Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jews. With Pilate's permission, he came and took the body away. 39) He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. 40) Taking Jesus' body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.

  16. WHAT ROLE DOES THE SPIRIT PLAY IN OUR LIVES TODAY “If you combine a charismatic speaker, a talented worship band, and some hip, creative events, people will attend your church. Yet this does not mean that the Holy Spirit of God is actively working and moving in the lives of the people who are coming.” Francis Chan

  17. WHAT ROLE DOES THE SPIRIT PLAY IN OUR LIVES TODAY John 4:23-24 23) Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24) God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

  18. WHAT ROLE DOES THE SPIRIT PLAY IN OUR LIVES TODAY John 16:7-15  7) But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8) When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9) in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10) in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11) and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

  19. WHAT ROLE DOES THE SPIRIT PLAY IN OUR LIVES TODAY John 16:7-15  12) "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13) But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14) He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. 15) All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.

  20. HOW WILL WE RESPOND TO THE SPIRIT “The Lord challenges us to suffer persecutions and to confess him. He wants those who belong to him to be brave and fearless. He himself shows how weakness of the flesh is overcome by courage of the Spirit. This is the testimony of the apostles and in particular of the representative, administrating Spirit. A Christian is fearless.” Tertullian

  21. HOW WILL WE RESPOND TO THE SPIRIT Romans 8:1-8, 26-27   1) Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2) because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. 3) For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, 4) in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.

  22. HOW WILL WE RESPOND TO THE SPIRIT Romans 8:1-8, 26-27   5) Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6) The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7) the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 8) Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.

  23. HOW WILL WE RESPOND TO THE SPIRIT Romans 8:1-8, 26-27 26) In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27) And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.

  24. HOW WILL WE RESPOND TO THE SPIRIT “I don’t want my life to be explainable without the Holy Spirit. I want people to look at my life and know that I couldn’t be doing this by my own power. I want to live in such a way that I am desperate for Him to come through.” Francis Chan

  25. Questions • How can the Spirit motivate everything you do? • If the Spirit asks you today to go somewhere or do something that you wouldn’t normally do, or that would make you feel uncomfortable, how would you respond? • How do the things of this life quench the Spirit? • Have you considered the Holy Spirit a part of your everyday life, and are you willing to let Him really control every aspect of it?

  26. Questions • Do you expect the Holy Spirit to act in your life? Why not? • What does the Holy Spirit say to you today? • How can we show true love if not through the Holy Spirit? • How will you react to the Spirit today? • Are you willing to possibly change everything you do to let the Spirit lead?
