ZapTV: Personalized User-Generated Content for Handheld Devices in DVB-H Mobile Networks

This paper explores the use of ZapTV, a mobile TV platform, to provide personalized and user-generated content for handheld devices in DVB-H mobile networks. It discusses the technologies and functionalities of ZapTV, including web 2.0 and semantic web technologies, as well as the architecture and key components of the system. The paper concludes with a discussion on the impact of m-TV on viewers' routines and the role of semantic web and web 2.0 in enhancing user-generated content and personalized recommendations.

  2. Introduction • Mobile TV (m-TV) is a step further in the mobile phones use. • Access to multimedia contents over 2G/3G networks. • Due to capacity problems  Broadcasting technologies • DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting – Handheld). • Short times to watch m-TV  Filtering techniques to select interesting contents are needed. • ZapTV: Web 2.0 & Semantic Web

  3. ZapTV: Technologies Foundations • Web 2.0: • Collaboration and knowledge sharing among active users. • User interact in social networks: creation and tagging of contents  Folksonomies. • Semantic Web: • Semantic annotations (metadata)  meaning of information  interoperability among machines. • Metadata are formally represented in ontologies  TV-Anytime. • Reasoning about ontology  Semantic relationships.

  4. ZapTV: Main Functionalities • Broadcastingtohandhelddevices in mobilenetworks. • User-drivencontentgeneration in a social network. • Broadcasting of personalizedcontents: • Explicitrecommendations drivenbyusers • Implicitrecommendations  personalizationengine: • Content-basedfiltering: programs similar tothoseviewedbytheuser • Collaborativefiltering: programsappealingtotheviewer’sneighbors (similar preferences) • Planning of thematicbroadcastchannels. • Interactivecapabilities in theuserdevice.

  5. A few words about ZapTV architecture • Roles: content providers, m-TV providers, m-TV users. • Centralized architecture: • m-TV providers broadcast content throughout DVB-H network. • m-TV subscribers consume content in a personalized way. • Cooperative architecture: • Besides, m-TV users record, tag and upload contents over 2G/3G network. • Contents in m-TV provider: • Formally labeled contents  content provider  TV ontology • Informally tagged contents  users  folksonomy

  6. content providers m-TV provider TVContent … DVB-H network Sports Documentaries Fiction Contents 2G/3G network ZapTV at a glance feedback TVOntology m-TV users tagging contentupload rating Folksonomy m-TV users

  7. The architecture of ZapTV • Provision and adaptation of contents • Web interface forpublication, rating and recommendation of contents. • Personalization and planning of channels. • Broadcast and interactivitymanagement. • User terminal.

  8. Provision and adaptation of contents • Content acquisition from: • Web site  user-uploaded contents • Well-known UGC portals • Interactive contents acquisition • Transcodification of contents

  9. Web interface forpublication, rating and recommendation of contents • Presentation of contents • User management: • Logging into/logging out • Update preferences • Ratings • Viewing history • Explicit recommendations management

  10. Personalization and planning of channels • Implicit recommendation engine • Plannig logic must select: • Broadcast channel  TV-Anytime metadata • Broadcast time  User consumption history • Generation of ESG

  11. Broadcast and interactivity management • Transmission of contents through broadcast channels: • Information encapsulated as IP datagrams (playout). • Send interactive contents via 3G network.

  12. User terminal • Management of: • FLUTE carousel • ESG • DVB-H receiver • Interactivity options • Interactivity presentation • Player

  13. Final Discussion • m-TV changes the viewers’ routines  TV consumption at short idle intervals. • Personalized virtual channels by filtering broadcast contents as per users’ interests. • DVB-H for broadcast • 2G/3G network for return channel. • Semantic Web and Web 2.0: • Inference of knowledge from domain ontologies. • Social networks: user-generated content, participation, recommendation, folksonomies, tags, sharing.

  14. Thank you for your attention!
