What is Civil Engineering? • Civil engineering includes the design and construction of buildings, roads, bridges and dams. • It is one of the oldest forms of engineering and involves further specialized areas such as: • Construction • Environmental • Geotechnical • Materials • Structural • Transportation • Water Resources

  4. A civil engineer created the slippery part of a water slide. A civil engineer designed a pumping system to circulate just the right amount of water to the flume. Without the right flow of water, there is no ride. Additionally, civil engineers have designed the slide to withstand the weight of people, the water, and even the force of the wind blowing on it.

What is Architectural Engineering? • Architectural engineering is the study of planning, design, constructionand operation of engineered systems for all different kinds of buildings. • Engineered systems are things like: • Electrical Systems • Lighting • Heating; Air Conditioning • Ventilation • Fire Protection • Plumbing • Structural Systems

  6. An architectural engineer explores how construction, design and operation of a building fit together. Unlike architects that typically focus on aesthetic and layout concerns, architectural engineers also focus on structure, stability, materials, integrated control systems and renewable energy. What is Environmental Engineering? • Keeping our air and water clean, developing systems to minimize health risks from hazardous wasteand promoting regulations for industries. • Environmental engineers learn: • the impact of different industries on the environment • strategies for reversing damaging effects • ways to provide potable water • ways to reduce air pollution • the safest methods for waste disposal Eric Farrow, a master’s student, is finding ways to reduce the arsenic content in rice.

  8. One of our Environmental Engineers studies former meth houses and their toxicthreats for new home owners. Methamphetamine emitted from building materials can re-accumulate in clothing, toys and other fleecy materials. Kids put anything they can find in their mouths. Research results help develop stricter standardsfor meth lab remediation.
