  3. 9.2 Speed and Velocity • Average speed is the total distance traveled divided by the total time taken to travel that distance. • Instantaneous speed is the speed of an object at a single instant. • Remember to use the SI units of meters and seconds!!!

  4. Calculating Speed The Speedy Secret Triangle!!! S=speed D=distance T=time To use the triangle, cover the quantity you are trying to find, and the formula appears!

  5. Examples Mrs. Hurwitz has a pet African Spur-Thighed Tortoise named Frankie. Although Frankie weighs nearly 100 pounds, he is not as slow as you might think. • If Frankie travels 7.8 meters in 10 seconds, what is his average speed? • If Frankie wants to walk at a pace of 1.5 m/s, how much time will he have to travel 16.5 meters? • If Frankie wants to walk at a pace of 2.3 m/s, how far will he have to travel in 6.5 seconds?

  6. Velocity • Velocity is a vector quantity. • It describe both the SPEED and the DIRECTION of an object in motion • A change in velocity can be due to a change in direction, a change in speed, or both.

  7. Mrs. Hurwitz is riding King Tritons Carousel of the Sea at Disneyland. The carousel is moving at a constant speed. Is her velocity changing?

  8. Graphing Speed • The slope of a distance vs. time graph will tell you the speed. • slope=rise/run • When the slope is zero, the object is at rest. • If the slope is a straight line, then the object is traveling at a constant speed. • If the line is curved, then the speed is not constant during that interval.
