  3. Acts 3:1-11 1  Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer. 2  And a man who had been lame from his mother's womb was being carried along, whom they used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, in order to beg alms of those who were entering the temple. 3  When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking to receive alms. 4  But Peter, along with John, fixed his gaze on him and said, "Look at us!" 5  And he began to give them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. 6  But Peter said, "I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—walk!" 7  And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. 8  With a leap he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. 9  And all the people saw him walking and praising God; 10  and they were taking note of him as being the one who used to sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple to beg alms, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. 11  While he was clinging to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the so-called portico of Solomon, full of amazement.

  5. 1  Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer. 2  And a man who had been lame from his mother's womb was being carried along, whom they used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, in order to beg alms of those who were entering the temple. Do we know who John is in this passage? see Luke 22:8 notice Peter is still going to the Jewish temple for prayer the man was lame from birth – validated a true miracle went every day to the temple gate called Beautiful - we do not know which gate Luke is referring to here What does it mean to beg for alms ?

  6. A portico in the Jerusalem Temple

  8. 3  When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking to receive alms. I do not possess silver & gold - but what I do have I give to you possess - to be in existence, to be ready, at hand In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—walk! - “In the name of” - lit: start walking and keep on walking • Peter had the power and authority to heal as an apostle

  9. Apostleship in the New Testament * • The word “apostle” means a sent one with a mission or message • The apostles were not given to the church, the body of Christ until after the ascension of Christ (Eph. 4:8-11) • Apostleship was a spiritual gift (1Cor 12:28) bestowed by the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 12:11) • The apostles were also endowed with sign or miracle-working gifts like healing, tongues, prophecy • An apostle was an eyewitness of the resurrected Christ (1 Cor 9:1; 15:5-9) • Apostles exercised doctrinal authority over the early church until the completion of the New Testament • There is no such thing as apostolic succession; no one takes their place. The gift ended with the twelve and Paul. adapted from R. Merryman Acts verse by verse

  10. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking to receive alms. 4  But Peter, along with John, fixed his gaze on him and said, "Look at us!" 5  And he began to give them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. 6  But Peter said, "I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—walk!"7  And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. 8  With a leap he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up see Matt 8:14-15, Matt 9:23-25, Matt 20:29-34 immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened Lit: instantly his feet and ankle bones were made strong with a leap he stood upright (lit: leaping up he stood) walking and leaping and praising God

  11. 9  And all the people saw him walking and praising God; 10  and they were taking note of him as being the one who used to sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple to beg alms, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. 11  While he was clinging to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the so-called portico of Solomon, full of amazement. • all the people saw him walking and praising God • the people = Men of Israel • they were taking note (lit: they recognized him) • the one who used to sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple to beg alms • they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. • all the people ran together to them - full of amazement

  12. Question: What does “forsaken me” mean when Christ was on the cross ? Mark 15:34 At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" which is translated, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?“ (from PS 22:1) Mark 15:34 --- which means, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me [deserting Me and leaving Me helpless and abandoned]? Amplified Bible forsake – kataleipo - to forsake, in the sense of abandoning - by implication, to leave in the lurch, forsake, desert, abandon See Acts 2:27 & 31; Heb. 13:5

  13. What did Christ suffer on the cross ? • Christ died for all sins • Christ died unto the sin nature • Christ was made sin on our behalf

  14. Sins vs. Sin Fruit = personal Sins 1 Cor. 15:3 --- Christ died for our sins Root = the Sin (Sin Nature) Rom. 6:10 --- He died unto sin

  15. Christ died for all sins • 1 John 2:2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. • Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. • Hebrews 9:28 so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.

  16. Christ died unto the sin nature Romans 6:10 For in that he died, he died unto (the) sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Romans 6:10 For the death He died, He died with respect to our sinful nature once for all. But the life He lives, He lives with respect to God. (Wuest NT) Romans 8:3 For that which is an impossibility for the law, because it was weak through the sinful nature, God having sent His Son in likeness of flesh of sin, and concerning sin, condemned sin in the sinful nature, (Wuest NT) also see Rom 6:12-14 – believers delivered from its power

  17. Christ was made sin on our behalf 2 Corinthians 5:21 He who did not know sin in an experiential way, on behalf of us and instead of us, was made sin, in order that, as for us, we might become a righteousness of God in Him. (WuestNT) He did not ever experience sin on behalf of us and instead of us He was made sin Galatians 3:13a Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us --- Also see Q&A Is it true that “God cannot look upon sin” ?
