Background • 11n wanted to be sure that the technical solution satisfied typical usage models and objective comparison criteria • 11n usage model document defined environments, applications, uses cases, usage models, all distilled into simulation scenarios • There were 9 environments, 21 applications, 39 use cases, 17 usage models, 11 simulation scenarios • Simulations were important in quantifying the amount of improvement of a feature • But in the end the task group focused on only three simulation scenarios • And it was necessary by those performing the simulations to modify the applications to saturate the system • 11n comparison criteria document included many categories requiring extensive documentation by the proposal teams • Categories include marketability, backward compatibility and coexistence with legacy devices, performance measurements at the MAC SAP, MAC changes, PHY rates and preambles, channelization, spectral efficiency, PHY performance, PHY changes • In the end the task group focused mainly on throughput simulations • Physical layer impairments definitions were very useful in adding realism to PHY simulations Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

System Simulation Scenarios Evaluation • Intent of the simulation scenarios is to quantify the benefit of new features introduced to the standard in typical usages • Minimize the simulation scenarios to those absolutely necessary to cover a diverse set of applications, environments, and channels • Minimize comparison criteria to quantitative metrics (e.g. throughput) • Simulation Scenario 1: Home living room • Application 1: Uncompressed video between set top box and TV • Simulation Scenario 2: Office conference room • Application 1: Laptop transmitting lightly compressed video to projector • Application 2: Laptops connected to AP for local file transfer and web browsing • Application 3: Mobile device connected to laptop for sync-and-go • Simulation Scenario 3: Enterprise cubicle • Multiple cubicles with devices operating on same channel • In each cubicle • Application 1: Laptop transmitting lightly compressed video to display • Application 2: Laptop connected to AP for local file transfer and web browsing • Application 3: Laptop connected to hard drive Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation
