  1. Memory TJ Moore and Scott Barringer

  2. Types of Storage • USB Flash Drive • Compact Disk • SD Card • DVD • External Hard Drive

  3. USB Flash Drives • Varies in size and capacity. • Helpful in that there are no additional cables or wires. • All that is needed is a USB slot on the computer. • Invented in 1998

  4. USB Flash Drives • The primary benefit is its capacity. • Has replaced the now out-dated floppy disk drives. • Wide range of different memory storage capacities.

  5. Capacities • The first flash drives were developed with memories of only 8, 16, 32, and 64 Megabytes. • Now flash drives can range from 1 gigabyte to 256 gigabytes. HOLY $#^*

  6. USES • Moving files from one computer or laptop to another. • Troubleshooting • Having a portable computing environment. • Booting up your computer or laptop.

  7. EXAMPLES

  8. Compact Disks • Also known as CD’s • Can be flimsy at times. • Can be easily broken. • Quickly becoming an outdated form of technology. • Good for storing a multitude of song files, movie files, and picture files.

  9. CAPACITIES • Can normally hold about 80 minutes of audio media. • About 650 megabytes of data. • Not even close to a modern day flash drive. • Much higher storage than an old floppy disk.

  10. USES • Normally used for storing small files. • Most common use is for “burning” music. • Can be used for quick mass production of files. • Holding a large number of picture files. • Storing data.

  11. EXAMPLES

  12. SD CARDS • Newer form of technology. • Found in many digital cameras, laptops, media players and even cell phones. • Proven to be a very popular and useful piece of technology. • Some can be installed into flash drives.

  13. SD CARDS CONTINUED • Quickly becoming more used than many Compact Flash chips. • Can hold a vast number of data files, audio files and picture files.

  14. CAPACITIES • Can have as much as 32 Gigabytes of memory. • The memory span is growing and becoming faster all the time. • Can be up to 150x faster than other forms of memory storage.

  15. USES • Used in many new digital cameras. • Hold files in many new laptops and PCs. • Most cells phones use SD cards for storing media and some recorded audio. • Good for holding audio in most new audio players and MP3/iPods.

  16. USES CONTINUED • Good for holding data and files in laptops and PCs. • Can be implemented in some video game systems for storage of games.

  17. EXAMPLES

  18. DVD • Used for storage of most movie files. • Shelf life of over 100 years • Read by lasers so they can be read hundreds of times • Same disadvantages of CD’s

  19. CAPACITIES • Can hold up to 4.7 gigabytes of information per side. • About 133 minutes of MPEG-2 audio/video • Can hold about 30 hours of VHS quality audio/video.

  20. USES • Home video • Mass production of movies. • Profitable sales. • Converting VHS audio video to a more portable and convenient form.

  21. Examples

  22. EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES • Sits on the outside of the computer tower. • Sometimes contains a cooling fan. • Can keep all of you DVD images, audio files, and other data safely. • Is a great financial investment for multiple people using one computer.

  23. CONTINUED • Easily change out drives without as much hassle. • Small and out of the way. • Newer form of computing technology. • Holds more data and information than all other memory devices.

  24. CAPACITIES • Most have about 500 gigabytes of storage. • Some actually have about 1 terabyte of storage capacity and above. That’s alota data ! ! ! !

  25. USES • Store all of your data in one central area. • Keep all of your data and other important files safe. • Easily transfer data and all other transferable data from one area to the next. • Change other drives with more ease.
