GROVE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING (GSOE) • The only School of Engineering in CUNY • Engineering Ph.D. degrees awarded by CCNY (computer science Ph.D. program at the CUNY Graduate Center) • Six Departments; Eight undergraduate Programs • Two new masters programs: Masters degree in Information Systems, and Masters degree in Sustainability in the Urban Environment (interdisciplinary program with Science and Architecture) • Office of Academic Affairs • Office of Graduate Studies • Office of Student Development (focus on students with < 45 credits) • Office of Student Research and Scholarship • 111 Faculty; 3 Distinguished Lecturers • 15 Research Associates • 12 GSOE based Centers and Institutes • School-wide and Departmental External Advisory Boards

FOR STUDENT SUCCESS • Incrementally increase admission criteria • Beginning Fall 2010, students apply directly to GSOE for admission • Joint degree programs with Community Colleges • Office of Student Development: focus on lower division (under 45 credits) advising • Establish Office of Student Research and Scholarship • http://deepspace9.sci.ccny.cuny.edu/SRS/index.html • Better communications with student body • Support for undergraduate student organizations (outreach, competitions, events, etc.) • Pre-College programs • STEM Institute • Transportation Summer Institute • Robotics First • STEM Summer Camp for middle-school • National Grid/LAESA Pre-College day

  7. Recent Key Hires • Dr. William Rossow as Distinguished Professor in EE and NOAA-CREST Distinguished Scientist. Formally at NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York. He is listed as the 10th most cited geoscientist by the Citation Index. Environmental research. • Dr. Charles Joseph Vörösmarty as CUNY Director of Global Environmental Sensing and Water Sciences Initiative and NOAA-CREST Distinguished Scientist and Professor of CE. Formally from the University of New Hampshire, Director of the Water Systems Analysis Group and Director of the Complex Systems Research Center, Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space. Environmental research. • Dr. Sanjoy Banerjee as Distinguished Professor in ChE and Director of the Energy Institute. Formally from the University of California at Santa Barbara where he was Professor of ChE. School received a $500,000 grant from New York State to recruit Dr. Banerjee. • Dr. Jorge E. González Cruz was recruited and hired as Professor in the Department of ME. Formally from Santa Clara University, Department of ME. He was a former Chair of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. Energy and environmental research • Dr. Masahiro Kawaji as Professor of ME. Formally from the University of Toronto, Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry. Joined the Energy Institute and does nuclear energy research. • Dr. Mitchell B. Schaffler as CCNY Presidential Professor and the Wallace Coulter Professor in BME. Professor of Orthopaedics and Director of Orthopaedic Research at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Biomedical Research.
