  1. Shadows and Eclipses

  2. SHADOWS • In general, the closer an object is to the screen, the sharper the shadow. As the object gets further away, the shadow becomes blurry.

  3. 2 PARTS TO A SHADOW • UMBRA the total darkened part in the middle. • PENUMBRA the partially darkened part around the edges.

  4. PARTS OF SHADOW (CONT.)

  5. LUNAR ECLIPSE • The Earth’s shadow falls on the moon.

  6. LUNAR ECLIPSE (CONT.) • A TOTAL lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the UMBRA of Earth’s shadow. • A PARTIAL lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the PENUMBRA of Earth’s shadow. • What time must it be to see a lunar eclipse? (Daytime or nighttime) • What lunar phase is required for a lunar eclipse? • Has anyone ever seen a lunar eclipse? Why do so many people get to see a lunar eclipse?

  7. SOLAR ECLIPSE • The moon’s shadow falls on the earth.

  8. SOLAR ECLIPSE (CONT.) • A TOTAL solar eclipse is seen when the observers are in the UMBRA of the Moon’s shadow. • A PARTIAL solar eclipse is seen when the observers are in the PENUMBRA of the Moon’s shadow. • What time must it be to see a solar eclipse? (Daytime or nighttime) • What lunar phase must there be to see a solar eclipse? • Why do so few people witness a solar eclipse?

  9. ECLIPSE QUESTIONS TO ASK • If a FULL moon is required for a LUNAR eclipse, do we get a lunar eclipse once a month? • If a NEW moon is required for a SOLAR eclipse, do we get a solar eclipse once a month? • There are TWO conditions for an eclipse… • The moon must be in the correct PHASE • The moon must be in the correct PLANE • Why do so few people see solar eclipses? Are they rare? (look at the size of the Earth… and its shadow and the size of the moon… and its shadow).
