  1. Dilations We are learning to transform an object by performing a dilation. Wednesday, April 2, 2014

  2. Vocabulary • Dilation - A transformation in which an object is altered by expanding or shrinking all sides of the figure by the same amount. • Scale Factor - The amount that the length of each side is multiplied by in order to dilate an object. • Center of Dilation - The center of a dilation is a fixed point. All other points of a dilation are not fixed points.

  3. Find the length of the sides of the dilated objects based on the scale factor: Original Triangle Dilate the sides of the original triangle by a scale factor of 3: 24 inches 27 inches 39 inches Discussion Topic: Is the end product of a Dilation congruent to the original? How do you know?

  4. Dilate the following figures on the given coordinate planes: Center of Dilation = Point S Scale Factor = 2 8 7(2) = 14 U´ V´ 4(2) = 8 4 U 14 V Dilation 14 7 7 7(2) = 14 T´ T S S´ 4(2) = 8 8 4

  5. Center of Dilation is Point Y Scale Factor is K´ K Y P´ L´ P E´ L C´ E C

  6. Answer in complete sentences… • How is a dilation different from the other 3 types of transformations (reflections, rotations, and translations) that we have studied?

  7. Dilate the figure to the right if:The center of dilation is at Point ZThe Scale Factor is 5 W Z I J Which of the following the ordered pair for the point J´? • (7, 8) • (-5, -2) • (-5, 6) • (7, -2) J´
