  2. THE KALAMAZOO PROMISE • An informal conversation-what’s the one big idea? • Rules were not known • Just kept thinking big, and being resilient • Kept the benefit of community and citizens in mind • Took a lot of time to think it through

  3. What Is the Kalamazoo Promise? • An economic impact • A catalyst for change and transformation • A forward moving community • A higher standard • A symbol of hope • A variable for businesses • A bright future for youth

  4. Why The Kalamazoo Promise? Juan Enriques author of As The Future Catches You, “you have to educate your kids and turn them on to college.”

  5. Why Higher Education? • Job Qualifications (70% require post secondary-new jobs in Kalamazoo-7,000) • Wages and earnings-up to 23% boost from High School diploma • Being competitive-Quality Communities • Companies: Financial incentives and people power

THE KALAMAZOO PROMISE INVESTING IN YOUTH: Communication and Marketing Create and Market a Region of Choice For Economic Development Provide Outstanding Education to ALL students Engage the Community to Ensure Every Student Succeeds Continue to Revitalize the Urban Core Education PreK-16 KCIS & support partners Government City & County Business/other Agencies

  7. WORKING TOGETHER: Education is a catalyst for economic development and community vitality. ONE MESSAGE ONE COMMUNITY

What Are TKP Strategic Indicators? • Community Engagement – led by the North side Ministerial Alliance and Kalamazoo Communities in Schools, many others • Education (PreK-16) – led by Kalamazoo Regional Education Service Agency, Kalamazoo Public Schools, KVCC, WMU and K College • Urban Revitalization – led by the mayor of the City of Kalamazoo, and other communities • Economic Development – led by the W.E. Upjohn Institute, Southwest Michigan First, Downtown Kalamazoo, Inc. and the Chamber of Commerce

  14. So far, how are we doing? • 7,000 new students • JOBS: Fabri-KAL, Kaiser Aluminum, Target Distribution, MPI, AT/T, and more • General Education Fund: ten million • New Educators • 70% in Kalamazoo at WMU, KVCC • 85% using the Kalamazoo Promise
