A difference between appearance and reality, expectation and result, or meaning and intention Situational Irony Dramatic Irony Verbal Irony What happens is the opposite of what the characters or reader expect. A difference between what the characters think and what the audience/reader knows. Words are used to suggest the opposite of what is meant. Moments after driving a new car off the lot, you are in a wreck While a teenage character is telling her friend how ugly the principal is, he is standing right behind them. The town of Sleepy Hollow is anything but sleepy with the Headless Horseman on the loose.
