  1. New Members of the SOFIA Users Group(Former SSSC) Eric Becklin SOFIA Chief Science Advisor SSSC NASA Ames May 11, 2011

  2. Outline of Material • Motivation for going from SSSC to SUG • Present members of the SSSC • Proposed make up of SOFIA User’s Group (SUG) • What old members need to be replaced • Proposed membership with TBD’s • How to get good TBD’s • Other issues

  3. Motivation for Transition from SSSC to SUG • In the JSPP-2, the SSPC’s primary task is to monitor the scientific operation of SOFIA, provide feedback on scientific performance and policies. They are the scientific oversight committee. • The SUG is to review the scientifically relevant technical performance of the SOFIA observatory and to provide technical feedback. The SUG represents the user community. • The SSSC was put in place for development of SOFIA we are now starting operations.

  4. Page 5 Present Members of SSSC • Mark Morris (Co-Chair, UC Los Angeles) • Urs Graf (Co-Chair, University of Cologne) • John Bally (University of Colorado) • Ted Bergin (University of Michigan) • Imke De Pater (UC Berkeley) • Robert Gehrz (University of Minnesota) • Alfred Krabbe (DSI) • Margaret Meixner (Space Telescope Science Institute) • Keith Noll (Space Telescope Science Institute) • Instrument PIs (ex-officio members, non voting)

  5. Page 6 Proposed Makeup of the SUG • 10 Users from the community…..2 who would be from Germany. • 2 members of the present instrument teams

  6. Page 7 Present members that should be replaced • Mark Morris (Been a member of and on for 15 years) • Alfred Krabbe (Present Director of the DSI) • Margaret Meixner (Member of the SSPC) • Instrument PIs (all ex-officio members except for 2)

  7. Page 8 Proposed Members • Robert Gehrz (Co-Chair, University of Minnesota) • Urs Graf (Co-Chair, University of Cologne) • John Bally (University of Colorado) • Ted Bergin (University of Michigan) • Imke De Pater (UC Berkeley) • Keith Noll (Space Telescope Science Institute) • TBD (US User) • TBD (US User) • TBD (US User) • TBD (German User) • TBD (German User) • TBD (US Instrument PI)

  8. Page 9 How to get Good new members: Present Users • Gehrz (for Humphries) • Harvey • Looney • Lundquist (for Kubulnicky) • Werner (presently SSPC so not good) • Whittney (for Tan) • Cole/Rebull • Rubin • Neufeld

  9. Other good people and other considerations • All PI’s and CoI’s that had proposals excepted or proposed • Well known Herschel and Spitzer users. (those that have given talks at Dan Lester’s tele-talks.) • We need to get 2 Germans…..best done by DSI or GSWG.

  10. Page 11 Other Issues • The members are appointed by Erick Young in consultation with Hans Zinnecker. • The SUG reports to Erick Young. • Do we have enough definition of work in the charter to get good members? • For example: Future instruments will not be directly related to the SOFIA Users group. • Relationship to the GSWG. • We need a written charter for the SUG.
