  1. Our Solar system

  2. The Milky Way

  3. The Milky Way • The Milky Way contains about 200 billion stars • The Milky Way moves at about 552km/s • The Galaxy is about 100,000-120,000 light-years in diameter • It is estimated that the Milky Way is 13.2 billion years old • It is about 1,000 light-years thick • The Andromeda Galaxy is moving toward the Milky Way at 100-140km/s and within about 3-4 billion years the two galaxies may even join and form a new galaxy

  4. The Sun

  5. The sun • The Sun’s mass is about 332,900 Earth masses • The Sun is close to 4 and a half billion years old • The Sun’s core has a temperature of around 15.7 million K • The Sun is roughly 149.6 million kilometers away from Earth • Looking directly at The Sun delivers about 4 milliwatts of sunlight to the retina, over a period of years this sunlight heats the retina to a point that it may even contribute to the cause of cataracts • NASA’s Pioneers 5,6,7,8, and 9 were the first satellites launched to examine The Sun and they were launched between 1959 and 1968

  6. Planets

  7. Planets Terrestrial Planets Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus The Milky Way Neptune

  8. Planets • The word Planet is Greek for “wandering star” • In order to be specified as a planet the celestial body must be big enough to be rounded by its own gravity • As of January 14, 2012 725 planets are listed in the Extrasolar Planets Encyclopaedia • A scientific study in 2012 estimated a mean of at least 1.6 planets for every star in the Milky Way • Six of the main eight planets in our Solar System have one or more natural satellites orbiting it.

  9. The Asteroid Belt • Asteroids in the Asteroid belt are made of rocky and metallic minerals and ice • The Asteroid belt is located between Mars and Jupiter’s orbit • Asteroids can be as big as hundreds of kilometers across while others are miniscule. • The largest Asteroid is Ceres • Asteroids with diameters of around 10m are called meteoroids Comets • Comets are made of mostly ice • When a comet comes to close to the sun its surface sublimates and creates a coma, dust and gas flowing behind the comet to create a long tail which we can see from earth • Some Comets orbit for around two hundred years while others last thousands of years. • As Comets get older sometimes they are changed to be asteroids.
