Chemical Reactions

By Matt Reeder

What is a chemical reaction?

A chemical reaction is a reaction between two atoms forming a chemical bond resulting in a chemical compound.

Why do chemical reactions happen?

What is a chemical equation?

A chemical equation is a way of writing out and describing a chemical reaction.

Why are chemical equations used?

Chemical equations are used to simplify and express the specific reactants and product of a chemical reaction.

Should chemical equations be balanced?

YES! The law of conservation of matter states that matter cannot be created or destroyed.

All elements that are a part of the left side of the equation must appear, in some form, on the left side of the equation.

Parts of a chemical equation

Reactants vs. Products

For example…

The arrow in a chemical equation

The arrow in a chemical equation represents the action, or reaction taking place forming the chemical bond.

2H2 + O2 H2O

SYNTHESIS REACTION

  • A type of reaction where two or more atoms join to form a more complex compound.

  • Reactant + reactant product

  • 2H2+02H2O

Peanut butter + Chocolate Reeses

DECOMPOSITION REACTION

  • Opposite of a Synthesis reaction.

  • One reactant compound separates resulting in two or more products.

  • Reactant Product + Product

  • 2H2O2 2H2 + O2

Firecracker = Explosion + cardboard

SINGLE REPLACEMENT REACTION

  • A reaction involving more than two elements in which one element takes the place of another one.

  • Reactant + reactant product + product

  • Zn + 2HCl ZnCl2 + H2

Baby and toy + big brother = baby + big brother and toy

Double Displacement

  • Two compounds react to form two new compounds.

  • reactant + reactant Product + product

  • AgNO3 + NaClAgCl + NaNO3
