  2. Words to Know Variable: a letter used to represent a number that is not specified. Algebraic expression: an expression that includes one or more variables. It can also include numbers and symbols.

  3. Numerical expressions 6 + 3 is a numerical expression. Numerical expressions show numbers being combined with operational symbols. And what are operational symbols??? 18 ● 5 5 – 2 This is also a numerical expression.

  4. Algebraic Expressions Algebraic expression: expression that includes one or more variables. Remember: variable is a letter used to represent a number. A variable can be any letter. The most common are x and n. Examples: 3x – 16 kb + c a

  5. Practice together • Write an algebraic expression for the phrase “the quotient of seven and a number” What do we know about the word quotient?? What do we know “a number” means? Answer: 7 x

  6. More practice together 2. Write an algebraic expression for the phrase “ten less than one-third of a number” What does less than mean? What does one-third of a number really mean? Answer: 1 3 a – 10

  7. Practice with word problems 3. A taxi charges a flat rate of $2 plus $2.50 per mile driven. Write an algebraic expression for the total cost of a taxi ride that went m miles. Flat rate means: Per mile driven means: Answer: 2 + 2.5m

  8. More practice word problems 4. Keisha brought some cookies to school. She gave 5 to her teacher and then divided the rest equally among the 24 students in her class.
