Emergent Countries and sport as a National Identity Riordan suggests that all developing countries are in the process of nation building, which normally entails the compulsory integration of a variety of tribal groups to establish stability. One outcome in the modern world is the recognition that sport is a competitive frontier which draws a nation together without bloodshed (think about football in England) However, technological and financial limitations mean that an elitist route is necessary, where focus is put on a specific sport that is straightforward to establish e.g. football in Brazil Funding and effort are then unequally (disproportionately) allocated to achieve excellence in this one area.
