  1. Memristors An Overview By Brent Jett

  2. Evidence shows that memristive materials have been studied for 200 years • Memristive phenomena were studied in 1808 by Michael Faraday and Sir Davis Humphrey. • Modern memristor originated in 1971 • Circuit theorist Leon Chua envisioned the idea of the memristor from the works of Faraday and Humphrey. • Not seen in production until 2008 Background

  3. Fundamental circuit element that forms a non-linear relationship between electrical charge and magnetic flux linkage. The element has 2 terminals, is passive and non-volatile. • Debate about expanding the definition of memristorto include all 2-terminal non-volatile memory devices based on resistance switching. Definition Memristor Symbol

  4. As current flows in through one terminal, the memristance increases. As current flows through the other terminal the memristance decreases. The memristor remembers the last value of current that passed through and retains that value even after shutdown. How It Functions

  5. Non-Volatile Memory: Memristors could be used in place of current solid state drives. Current memristors can be fabricated at sizes as small as 3 nm. The difference between the two comes from the fact that the RAM components that use memristors continue to remember data after being shutdown. Applications

  6. Crossbar Latch: The crossbar latch is meant to replace transistors. Solid-state memristors are combined to create the latch, and the reason for replacing the transistor with the latch is that the latch would take up less space with the same performance as that of the transistor. Applications

  7. Learning Circuits (Neuromorphic): This technology is still new. Memristor learning circuits are already capable of learning patterns of electrical pulses and anticipating which pulse will come next. They can be applied to simple memory applications and up to a simulated neural network. Applications

  8. Initial material found by HP in 2008. Titanium Dioxide. • Recent study put into Silicon materials such as Silicon Oxide. The memristors made using these materials can only be effective in vacuum states. Materials
