Learning Objectives • To understand what a multivariate data set is! • To understand how multivariate data sets can be used! • To understand what problems to look at! • To understand the difference between qualitative subgroups and quantitative variables • To Understand how to formulate a comparative question?
Investigate a Multivariate Data Set Using the Statistical Enquiry Cycle • In investigations of multivariate data it is expected that a number of quantitative or numeric variables will be examined for qualitative subgroups of the population.
The Problem: Asking The Question • The Physical Fitness of New Zealand High School Students • What statements can we make about the fitness of NZ High School Students?
The Problem: Asking the Question“The Physical Fitness of NZ High School Students” Possible qualitative groups and sub groups Possible quantitative or numeric variables used to compare groups
The Problem: Asking the Question“The Physical Fitness of NZ High School Students” Possible qualitative groups and sub groups Possible quantitative or numeric variables used to compare groups The Number of Push-Ups The Number of Sit-Ups accomplished in 2 minutes The Rested Heart Rate (beats/min) The Exercised Heart rate (Beats/min) 1.5 mile run in minutes 300 metre run in seconds Beep Test (cycles/10minutes) • Gender • Year Level • Age
Formulating a Comparative Question • When using multivariate data sets once the problem has been identified then a comparative question should be formulated that will be used to provide insight into the problem • All comparative questions begin, and must refer to the population you are interested in: “I wonder if ……. In the population of…..?”
Example • “ I wonder if the resting heart rate of year thirteen girls is higher then the resting heart rate of year thirteen boys in the population of New Zealand High School Students?” • “I wonder if year thirteen girls can perform better on the beep test than year thirteen boys can perform on the beep test.”
Exercise • Write Five New Comparative questions for the data set provided.
