Life in Youth and Community Work • Need to be confident, resilient and self reliant • Requires thoughtfulness and tact • Excellent communication skills needed • Young people are hard to reach - you must engage with them • Youth work also involves contact with families and an understanding of the impact families have • A degree is now essential to work in a youth setting

About the Course • 3 years • Reflects national policies and Government agenda • Emphasis on learning by experience • Up to 20 weeks on placement each year • Youth Clubs, Advice Centres, Youth Offending Teams, Schools…. • We help you find placements • Great way to build links for future employment

About the Course • Innovative Assessments to develop key skills • Writing a funding bid • Mock supervision of staff • Placement Portfolios • Facilitating an educational group work session • Variety of teaching methods • Group work, lectures, seminars, presentations, practical work • ‘Shuspace’ & e-Learning • Problem based learning and interaction • Independent learning • Inter-professional learning

  12. What we're looking for • Confidence, enthusiasm and resilience • Commitment to the principles and purpose of the profession • Excellent communication skills • An understanding of the career • At least 100 hours of work experience with young people aged 13-19

  13. Entry Requirements School and College leavers • 160 points from at least two A-levels or one A level and two AS levels (excluding general studies). Alternative qualifications e.g. BTECs are accepted • GCSE English Language and Maths at grade C or above

  14. Professional Requirements • Attendance and conduct is monitored • 80% minimum attendance to pass the course • Criminal Records Bureau check

  15. Application Process • Research Youth and Community Work and gain work experience • Apply through UCAS by 15January 2011 • If shortlisted, attend an interview day at Sheffield Hallam • Written Test • Individual Interview • Use firm and insurance offers to your advantage
