Future Hiring Demand Trends What is Next? • Manufacturing jobs are declining: • Peaked in 2002 (1.1M workers) and have been declining since; • 778,000 factory workers in Ontario in May 09; • Over 50% of all jobs lost in Ontario since Oct 2008 were in manufacturing. • Cities and Towns dependent on auto manufacturing will be affected the most (Oshawa, Oakville, Brampton, Aurora, Newmarket?) • Demand for blue-collar work: • Will decline, due to decline in manufacturing; • Will shift to lower-paying / less secure retail jobs; • Some new demand in health care, social services, and construction, but not enough to offset manufacturing declines; • Long-term structural challenge for Southern Ontario; • Hiring demand for Health Care and Social Services professionals will continue to grow in the medium term • Demand for managers has declined less in the downturn so far;
