  2. Igor Sikorsky: Inventing the First Helicopter • In the 1930s, Igor Sikorsky invented the first successful helicopter upon which further designs were based. • “In 1940 Igor Sikorsky's successful VS-300 had become the model for all modern single-rotor helicopters.” • “The VS-300 had a four-cylinder, 75 horsepower air-cooled engine, a three-bladed main rotor, 8.53 m in diameter, a welded tubular steel frame; a power transmission consisting of V-belts and bevel gears; a three-wheel landing gear arrangement and a completely open pilot's seat. “By the middle of 1940, the VS-300 was able to stay in the air for 15 minutes.

  3. Igor Sikorsky: How did the Helicopter Come to Be? • "The idea of a vehicle that could lift itself vertically from the ground and hover motionless in the air was probably born at the same time that man first dreamed of flying." - Igor Ivanovitch Sikorsky • “The first concept of rotary wing aviation came from the Chinese in the fourth century A.D” • ‘1480 : Leonardo Da Vinci 's Helical Air Screw theory for "compressing" the air and obtain lift was substantially similar to that for today s helicopters.” • “A wide amount of minor inventions contributed to the advancement of the helicopter between the fifteenth and twentieth centuries ... All models at this time lacked suitable power to achieve flight and were both bulky and heavy” • “The precision of parts due to the Industrial Revolution enabled the helicopter to evolve into the modern machines we see flying today. “ • “At the end of the nineteenth century, the invention of the internal combustion engine made it possible for the pioneers to develop full-sized models with an adequate power source.”

  4. Igor Sikorsky: Why was the helicopter important? • The helicopter is used by all five branches of the United States armed forces, along with military services and commercial operators in 40 nations. • The helicopter was also used to get sick and injured people to the place where they can receive the best possible medical care. • “Helicopters are used for everything from providing information about traffic to drivers (and therefore in at least some cases lessening the congestion of city streets and freeways), providing news coverage for events like wildfires that could not safely be covered in any other way” • The helicopter is so important to the military that it was used in many stealth missions. For example, it was used in the mission to help get Osama Bin Laden. • The Sikorsky helicopters are still in production today. According to the Sikorsky web site, the company employs over 18,000 people worldwide • According to web sources, Sikorsky Helicopters have saved over 22,000 lives. • The Stratford, CT facility is the center for research and testing. Across the world.

  5. Igor Sikorsky: My thoughts on his invention. • Igor Sikorsky is a hero because his invention saved lives by bringing people to medical care. • I also think that he was really cool because he helped a lot of people. • His invention helped the capture of one of the world’s most dangerous terrorist.
