  2. Topics • Organization • Applications • End-to-End Performance Initiative

  3. Organization

  4. Internet2 Mission • Develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies for research and higher education, accelerating the creation of tomorrow’s internet.

  5. Internet2/Federal Relationship • Separate but interdependent • U.S. Efforts in Large Scale Networking • Led by Federal government • Focused on Federal agency needs • Source of significant R&D funding and leadership • Internet2 • Led by higher education • Focused on research and education needs

  6. Applications

  7. Internet2 Applications • What are “Internet2 applications”? • They deliver qualitative and quantitative improvements in how we conduct research and engage in teaching and learning • They require advanced networks to work

  8. Sciences Arts Humanities Health care Business/Law Administration … Library Classroom Clinic Office Laboratory Dorm room … Different Disciplines/Contexts

  9. Interactive collaboration Real-time access to remote resources Application Attributes

  10. Large-scale, multi-site computation and data mining Shared virtual reality Any combination of the above Attributes, cont.

  11. p End to End Performance Initiative

  12. The Mission • To enable the researchers, faculty, students and staff who use high performance networks to obtain optimal performance from the current infrastructure on a consistent basis. Raw Connectivity Applications Performance

  13. No other complaints Everything is AOK Talk to the other guys System Administrator LAN Administrator LAN Administrator System Administrator Campus Networking Campus Networking Backbone Gigapop Gigapop The Problem Hey, this is not working right! Others are getting in ok Not our problem Applications Developer Applications Developer The computer Is working OK Looks fine All the lights are green How do you solve a problem along a path? We don’t see anything wrong The network is lightly loaded

  14. What the design team said: • Applications • Host/OS • Measurement Infrastructure • Operations and Human Communications • Performance Improvement Environment (PIE) • Performance Evaluation and Review Framework (PERF)

  15. This is what we need to do • Understand the applications and their performance requirements • Provide information about how to run networks in a reasonable way to achieve performance goals • Help the user who is running an application troubleshoot problems • Create something that brings all of this together for the end user

  16. Measurement Workshop • Packet loss is the top priority attribute that we need to study • We need a common schema for measurement data representation and exchange • Workshop activities need to continue using the Measurement Working Group for communication • http://www.internet2.edu/e2epi/WK01/workshop01_summary01.shtml
