  1. Asteroid Deflection Demonstrations www.nasa.gov/asteroidworkshop Join the discussion and send questions to: #ProtectPlanet NASA Asteroid Initiative Idea Synthesis • #ProtectPlanet

  2. Purpose of Asteroid Deflection Demonstrations • Deflect the trajectory of an asteroid using the robotic Asteroid Redirection Vehicle (ARV) that would be effective against objects large enough to do significant damage at the Earth’s surface should they impact (i.e., > 100 meters in size). • These demonstrations could include but not limited to: • a. Use of the ARV to demonstrate a slow push trajectory modification on a larger asteroid. • b. Use of the ARV to demonstrate a “gravity tractor” technique on an asteroid. • c. Use of ARV instrumentation for investigations useful to planetary defense (e.g. sub-surface penetrating imaging) • d. Use of deployables from the ARV to demonstrate techniques useful to planetary defense (e.g. deployment of a stand alone transponder for continued tracking of the asteroid over a longer period of time). 3. Selecting RFIs for Presentation • Area 1:  Reposition small asteroid/portion of asteroid to impact incoming large asteroid: Of course the ARV mission demonstrates the capability to move this class of mass already, but this is a great planetary defense justification for any instantiation of this mission • Area 2:  Using engine thrust to push rotating asteroid while using opposing thrust to hold relative position at a stand-off distance  • Area 3: Low-cost kinetic impactor (probably only applicable at the end of the “pick up a rock” mission) • Area 4: Enhanced gravity tractoring with local mass augmentation • Area 5:  Vaporizing asteroidal material using the sun for impulsive propulsion of the asteroid • Area 6: Swarm of small satellites attach to asteroid to de-spin and redirect it • Area 7: Proposals that looked applicable across the entire mission or non-deflection topics Top Rated RFIs from each of the below categories were selected NASA Asteroid Initiative Idea Synthesis • #NASAasteroid
