  4. The Younger Son Asking for his inheritance was like having a “death wish” for his father. It would have been inconceivable for a son to do such a thing to Jesus’ audience.

  5. The Younger Son He partied hearty. Squandered the wealth with no thought of his future

  6. The Younger Son Sometimes one has to reach their lowest point to come to their senses. He comes to his senses and begins the process of repentance.

  7. The Younger Son He asked for forgiveness from God and his father.

  8. The Older Brother Was always faithful But never had a personal relation Never realized everything belonged to him as well.

  9. The Older Brother Prideful Became jealous and angry Was unmerciful

  10. The Older Brother Never realized everything belonged to him as well. Did he enter the feast?

  11. The Father Always waiting for his return When he was far off he runs to him

  12. The Father Embraces and has a celebration

  13. The Father Goes out as well for the older brother and “begs” for him to join in the celebration

  14. The Prodigal Son • This parable highlights the “loving father.” • It illustrates the boundless, lavish love of God toward wayward children. • It shows the joy that awaits the sinner that repents and returns to God.

  15. Repentance • From the Greek “metanioa” • A complete reversal, a turning around of one’s direction and thought • The son repents and turns back to his father.

  16. Forgiveness • The common concept of forgiveness is that the perpetrator should come to the victim and ask for forgiveness. • Romans 12: 2

  17. Forgiveness • The practice of forgiveness imitates and extends God’s forgiveness by being proactive. • It takes the initiative to remove the barriers that separate people. • It does not wait until the offender comes and asks for it.

  18. Jesus The example that Jesus give is that of the victim initiating the process of forgiveness. Offering it in the hopes that it would bring the offender to repent.
