  7. UPPER‐LEVELCOURSES: • Upper‐level courses require a level of educational maturity that allows for more independent, proficient, and/or in‐depth work than at the lower level. These courses are characterized by a structure that allows for a variety of approaches to the subject matter, a wide range of course material, and an emphasis on independent work in the laboratory, library, studio, field, community, or workplace. Upper‐level courses strongly emphasize comprehension, analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and application of knowledge and skills. Students are expected to accept increasing responsibility for their own learning both inside and outside the classroom. Prerequisites may be specific courses, a specific level in a program, or a specific number of accumulated university‐level credits. • First digit 3: Upper‐level Undergraduate. These courses are intended for students in the third year of a program, and generally assume a solid base of learning and maturity developed in lower‐level courses. • First digit 4: Advanced Undergraduate. These courses are intended for students in the fourth year of a program, and may be focused on in‐depth exploration of specific specialty areas or on integrating knowledge and skills from previous courses.
